We’re also interested in trying out the new Walkie-Talkie feature, but we’re lukewarm on Apple Podcasts support-we wish some third-party podcast apps were announced as well. The Apple Watch will automatically detect when you start a workout, and you’ll receive retroactive credit for exercise you started before telling the Watch to track it. With watchOS 5, Apple will be doubling down on the fitness-tracking elements of its wearable. Apple also promised improved performance across all devices-apps will run faster, and in general even older devices will feel snappier. We’re excited to hear that iOS 12 will run on every device that runs iOS 11, including the iPhone 5s and the original iPad Air. You’ll also be able to use Snapchat-esque stickers and effects in FaceTime and Messages, and even Animoji and the new self-created Memoji avatars.Īll of these devices will be able to run iOS 12. Group FaceTime will allow up to 32 people to video-chat at once, with members dropping in and out whenever they like. Speaking of maps, CarPlay will be getting support for third-party navigation apps, including Waze and Google Maps. You’ll also be able to string together your own series of commands in a drag-and-drop editor: Imagine creating a shortcut where you say “Let’s go home,” and your map pops up, your smart thermostat adjusts, and your most recent podcast starts playing. If you install the Tile shortcut, for example, you’ll be able to say “I lost my keys,” and Siri will trigger our top-pick Bluetooth tracker. Third-party apps will be able to trigger actions with custom commands. We didn’t hear any talk of improving Siri’s reliability, but the voice assistant is at least getting new features, with shortcuts leading the way. You’ll be able to get weekly activity summaries in iOS 12. Apple also announced per-app limits and better content and privacy controls for family phones and tablets. Parents will appreciate the capability to set usage limits and allowances that sync across devices, as well as to receive usage reports for family-shared devices. Much like features announced for Android P last month, iOS will also track how long you’ve used your apps in a day and encourage you to stop after self-selected durations. Notifications will be grouped on the lock screen, and you can triage them all at once. Apple focused a lot of the iOS 12 presentation on eliminating distractions. IOS is Apple’s most used operating system, and it’s getting the most-and the biggest-updates. Here’s what will matter most to you when you update all your Apple gear this fall. A lot of the changes are improvements, but not all of the improvements are huge. The company announced new versions of iOS, watchOS, tvOS, and macOS, all with varying numbers of important features. Once again it’s June, and once again, Apple has previewed its autumn operating-system updates at its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC).
